Scuttle and Fly Screen

Driving the Riot is fun without a doubt but not having a wind screen is a little uncomfortable at times. I noticed that Sylva were offering a fly screen and I decided to get the fibreglass scuttle as well as the car looks better with it, in my opinion. Fitting it was a leap of faith and I went for it. First of all I needed to strip out the dash panel, everything mounted 300mm in front of the scuttle and 300mm behind it.

To fit the new scuttle the old one was pulled off and the steel hoop that supported the original scuttle was removed and the welds ground off as they are not needed for fitting the new scuttle.

Two slots had to be cut into the scuttle so they could clear the two side bars. Also holes were cut to clear the steering column and allow cables to pass out for the instruments. I had to make up some plates in aluminium below where the scuttle sides are mounted so that they hid the holes where the original scuttle was mounted.

I made up a pair of cover plates to go over where the side bars come through the scuttle panel to hide the holes and give a smooth transition. The fly screen is cut so that it sits flat, only when it is curved over the scuttle panel. With a little assistance it was held in place whilst a line was drawn over the scuttle panel so that brackets could be made. At the edges a strip of aluminium was used and was screwed to the scuttle, the bracket was screwed to the fly screen using some rubber washers to cushion the fly screen from the bracket to prevent the plastic from cracking. In the centre an aluminium bracket was made to support the fly screen. It holds the fly screen securely in place and also looks good as well!! Also the rear view mirror was also mounted on the scuttle just behind the centre bracket.

The bonnet had to have a sliver of fibreglass removed to that it sits flush with the scuttle. Also I fitted two L brackets under the scuttle to allow the fitment of a new dashboard.
